A Word from the Editor

Adriana Iordan
Adriana Iordan,
Web Marketing Manager, Avangate

>>Hi all, welcome to the first 2009 Avangate Digest issue!

Jason Calacanis sent on his private list an email with the subject "We Live in Public (and the end of empathy)" and I can't stop thinking about it (yes, he can have this effect on people). The message call was about how we treat each other online and how technology can turn against us. Which leads me to wanting to find new ways to communicate and exchange information with you.

Based on your feedback about the VIP Interviews series in Avangate Digest and to show my gratitude online, I decided to continue the list of software business people we admire. So, this month I am pleased to present you Neil Davidson, joint CEO of Red Gate Software, founder of the Business of Software conference and creator of a new software community I often visit.

Also, I have some exciting news for all of you who sell software through Avangate either as an affiliate or as a software author directly. If you haven't received yet our special newsletter, you should know you can choose to get paid using the Avangate Prepaid MasterCard powered by Payoneer. This way, you can spend or withdraw cash from the ATM in your local currency at favorable exchange rates.

Most of us know the reward of building connections online and I am glad we are sending this newsletter to you for almost 2 years now. I will soon be announcing a program that will better involve software business people in a community. If you want to be the first to know, then follow me on Twitter.

We welcome your feedback. Share your thoughts, email me directly at adriana.iordan@avangate.com

I hope you enjoy this newsletter!

Until next time,
Adriana Iordan

Technology Sells

by Claudiu Murariu

>>What do Bob Walsh, Twitter and Interruption Marketing have in common?

Bob Walsh has been again on a "great tips frenzy session" sharing out how to get "attention" for your software startups. I like his advices, especially the ones that help me get the most out of services like Twitter.

Speaking of Twitter, and being geeky about it, I am sure you are using those short and ugly URL's to let your followers know what your website or software product is up to. Now you can track in Google Analytics the impact your Twitter efforts have on your business.

Just don't be too pushy about your Twitter efforts. You might just upset your followers about it. Interruption marketing is not an easy task, as Neil Davidson shares it with us. Do it right and it can still bring you good results.

Cool places to hang out

by Roxana Patrichi

think geek Smashingmagazine.com is THE coolest place to be on this spaceship we call Internet if you are into web design or just interested in the new trends, practices or issues of contemporary web design. Managed by two German speaking guys and helped by a "smashing team of authors", Smashing Magazine really makes our life easier, just like they say they do :). Really. eCommerce, CSS, Wordpress, Usability, smart use of white space, you name it, I'm sure you'll find some valuable information in here.

business of software Seth Godin's Blog My hands are trembling trying to convince you that Seth Godin is worth following. That's because he is not only one of the best marketers out there, but he is also an innovator, a thought (read tribe) leader, an excellent speaker, a best selling author and a great guy. But I know we have at least one thing in common: we both have read at least one post on Avangate blog. Seriously now, read it, it might make your day.

I bet you will find at least one new idea from the articles and blog posts below:

Interruption Marketing: Rumors of its Death have been Greatly Exaggeratedby Neil Davidson
As Seth Godin says, you should create purple cows: products that are remarkable. Products that people want to talk about. But no matter how hard you try, your cow doesn't always end up purple. Sometimes you're stuck with a product that is merely good, or a product that people simply don't want to talk about. What do you do then?

Twitter + Analytics = Love
Most of you are already accustomed with URL address shortening services. You know, those websites which make your URLs short and ugly so you can post them on Twitter, Facebook or just send them to a friend. The artiocles provides tricks on how to track visitors coming from such links.

Getting attention for your startup by Bob Walsh
What's the one thing your startup needs more than great code, a killer marketing message or a compelling offer? Attention. Without attention, no one will know your startup has created the must-have web, desktop or mobile app of 2009, or that you even exist.
